the fiscal cliff, which i know you have been watching. you're very closely aligned with president obama having been the chair of the democratic national convention in september. i want to get your take on this. this is critical to your state. businesses in your state. taxpayers in your state. do you have any optimism that we may not go off the cliff? >> i do have optimism. there's no question about it. i think both sides understand that it's not in the nation's best interest for us to go off this cliff. people are tired of the partisanship. they want both sides to work together. they want them to do so in a balanced way. i agreed to join the stirring committee to fix the debt coalition and i have because the balance is that we have to make spending cuts. we have to address entitlements but we also have to make sure that we have the revenues that we need to make the investments that we need. education. infrastructure. transportation. research and development. workers training. all of those things are important things that we have to do. we have to get our spending in order as well. >> yo

of this "fiscal cliff" drama, they spoke yesterday raising hopes that formal talks will resume on how to to avoid across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases. we have been saying this for weeks. they will kick in if a budget agreement is not reached by year's end. >>> a number of state lawmakers had their cars fixed and you paid for it. lawmakers lost the perk of a free car about a year ago at least 37 of them deciding to buy the cars. that was an option. they have been using them when the state sold them. first they had all the cars repaired and maintained at state expense. $78,000 worth of work. >> as a taxpayer, you know, it's my money going to it so it's frustrating. >> doesn't sound fair. we work really hard for our money. >> we do. but a source in the legislature says the work was worth it. the state got more money when it sold the cars that were not bought by the lawmakers but had the repairs done. they got more money for those cars. so i guess it evens out. >>> same-sex marriage is now legal in the state of washington. dozens of gay and lesbians got in line to pick up marriage licens

of the talks we've heard about the fiscal cliff, we've heard about balance and new tax revenue. but we don't hear balanced a budget. i think -- balanced budget. i think this speaks to how bad the situation is in the federal government when both parties don'tage knowledge that. as for -- don't acknowledge that. as for what's going on, just downstairs from me, speaker boehner started throwing cold water on any report that the talks were moving ahead. yes, there have been an exchange of offers. he said the last couple of days, but he said his phone call last night was a frank discussion about just how far apart they are. with 19 days left until the deadline or nine days until the end of the world, if you are look at the mine cardinal, nobody knows which way -- calendar, nobody knows which way we are headed. >> isn't this part of the we're so far apart publicly. but suddenly, they will announce miraculously they've reached a deal? >> reporter: i think for those of us here trying to cover us, it's the hardest thing to try to figure out since you are not et going the inside part of this. how muc
